Happy New Year

Hi, Everyone,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I must bake a 'Happy Birthday, Saskatchewan' cake sometime today in between shovelng snow up and down the block.

Actually, I've shoveled from our house south past 3 1/2 houses and there's little wind and as a bonus, the snow has quit so once with the shovel ought to do it today.

The local news and weather is coming on shortly so I will go see what's in store for the beginning of 2005.

Get out your cheque books and write in the new year on the first 10. After that, you should be aware of what year you are in!

We sent cheques to Doctors Without Borders and the Mennonite Central Committee for the tsunami relief. If anyone wants those addresses, let me know.

We are SO lucky to live where we do.

Trip Home

We left Blairmore just before noon. When we turned on the radio, we had Regina CBC to see what things were like in SK.

The forecast was for a weather system to move in from Utah bringing freezing rain, snow and then Thursday afternoon, wind. It didn't sound like a good combination. This was to cover the whole southern part of the province.

We didn't dawdle....we just hustled along with no thoughts of a side trip to see Anne and Gordon although I'd thought about calling them from Lethbridge to meet us in Seven Persons for coffee. We stopped for gas and bought coffee to go and skipped the idea of any visiting.

By Medicine Hat, we needed a brief break from the highway so we went into Value Village for 25 minutes and then decided to get back to the road. Anyone who has limited themselves to 25 minutes in Value village knows how impossible THAT is!!! But we did it!!

As long as it was daylight, we could watch the skies behind us....they were clear as could be....not one bit threatening.

When night came, we could see stars and then the almost full moon so I wondered if we were a bit off as far as the threatening weather was concerned. I'd walked the dog a few places, not needing my coat but then when we got to Moose Jaw...was there a cold wind!! I put my coat on before I opened the car door and when I got out...brrrr. I cut the dog's walk short.

We stopped in east Regina for more take-out coffee and chicken nuggets at Wendy's. When we got out of the city, we were into drifting snow and it was like that all the way home. You know what your dad is like in the best of driving conditions so he was not liking this part of the trip at all but we were both sure that we wanted to keep on until we saw the lights of Wolseley. It was his suggestion we not stop anywhere and I was glad of that.

We unloaded everything from the car last night because the chill factor sounded really cold for today.

When we got up this morning and saw the snow we got in the night, were we glad we were here and not in some motel somewhere.

We had everything unloaded by midnight. Dad went to bed soon after we got home. The dog kept wanting out and not wanting back in. I don't know how many cups of coffee we drank but it kept me awake until 3 am so I just read the papers and mail. I never thought to look out before I put the light out to see if it was snowing!!

I shovelled the sidewalks three times today. The snow at the front is almost up to the top of the hedge. We had hardly any before we left. Dad took the dog for the mail and some milk and cream but other than that, we just put her out on her rope in the yard. The streets were too deep in snow to be safe to walk on. The three houses south of us are all vacant so I shovelled that sidewalk and 1 1/2 sidewalks to the north of us because anyone walking, needed to be off the road. Walking between the shop and garage to get the bag of birdseed for the feeder, the snow was to my knees or above them.

I must have worn off some of the Christmas chocolates we ate over the holiday with all the shovelling!! The weather was not very cold so that was good. I don't know what happened to the wind chill. Someone else got it.

We watched the hockey, Canada vs Finland, from Grand Forks tonight and they were saying the highway north to Wpg is closed due to the storm so they didn't know how the Canadian fans were going to get home or where they'd all be staying. They thought they'd bring in another beer truck and just party the win away (8-1 for Canada) so maybe they'll start the New Year celebrations a day early. What can the boss say.....the road was closed!! I wonder what kind of a trip the fans had getting down there??!! Something sounds fishy here, doesn't it??

I didn't mean for this to be so long so I'm outta here!!

Take a peek at the updated muzak list and tell me what you need. :)

Music for x-mas

This is the first time ever, I can remember, that I didn't get any music for x-mas. The girls got music, purchased by me, and Blaine got music, also purchased by me. Dana asked for Hillary Duff's latest and Shelly wanted Good Charlotte's newest. Blaine got Lonely Runs Both Ways - Alison Krauss. It's a fantastic cd. I'm most impressed with Shelly's after x-mas purchase. She got a gift card and bought How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - U2. She's been walking around with her headphones glued to her head ever since. Hopefully she'll start a U2 collection.

I would love it if a certain sibling could burn me some Elvis Costello - best of stuff from music prior to Spike. If you have some time, Mitch, could ya?

Heres hoping everyone has a good New Year's Eve. Love Jen

Christmas in the Pass

The day we arrived here, they had a wind warning we didn't hear on the radio but we sure as heck knew it was a wild one out there!! It blew from the west so we were driving into it. That was likely fortunate because some vehicles driving up toward Calgary got blown off the road into the ditch. Not fun.

Christmas night it began to snow a fine snow that accumulated plenty over night but not enough for the ski hills in this corner of Alberta.

Then the weather changed to be very nice. It was great for walking the pooch.

Steve took CoCo and met a friend with a young dog, Chip, and they hiked up the ski hill. The dogs had a dandy run. Chip was a bit too much of a teenager in dog years so CoCo took a round out of him which took the poor dog down a peg or two but then they carried on and had a good time together.

I should do this after we go home so we can visit some more with Jessica and Steve. The weather girl says it is blowing in another storm like we had Christmas evening so we want to get out ahead of it.

I'm outta here!

I think this is what they're supposed to look like when they turn out. And they taste as good as Jessica said they would.  Posted by Hello

I took another crack at Jessica's mole-asses cookies and this time around they may actually turn out right. I used real (from the cow) butter and brown sugar (from the cane or beets or whatever other plant they get sugar from) and I could tell immediately that they might be ok. The consistency of the batter is totally different.

Christmas and OC Transpo

Ok, so I knew what I was getting into when I decided to return my leased car and not purchase/lease another. I was going to become a full-time mass transitter. I was OK with that. I figured "Hey, they have bus schedules that I can check. As long as I plan for the buses to come at the scheduled time +/- 5 minutes I'll have this all under control."

That was before Christmas came. I know what you're thinking.. "It's not been but 2 weeks and already she's complaining? Looks like trouble!" Well, I think I have a valid complaint here. (I think all of my complaints are valid anyhow ;-)) So back to my story.....

I'm not sure if everyone knows, but I started a new job in November. I'm working back in the West End of town and I work Friday, Saturday, Sunday only and the hours are from 10am until 10pm. It's not bad. I work 36 hours in 3 days and get paid for 40, it's no stress and when I leave, the job doesn't come home with me.

So this morning, ensuring that I'm prepared for the Christmas bus schedule, I check www.octranspo.com again (about the 5th time.. I really don't want to be late at a new job) and confirm that yes, the bus is running on a reduced schedule today. Instead of coming by every 7 minutes the #2 is running every 10 minutes this morning. The bus I want to catch should be at my stop at about 8:41am and that will get me at the Rideau Centre at 8:55am where I have 12 minutes to wait until my transfer. No problem. I am in a bit of a panick because I am actually running a little late but I make it out the door with time to spare, slide across solid ice down to the street and quickly look up and down the street to ensure the bus hasn't yet passed. Nope, no bus. I can see about 4 minutes down the road where it would be if it had passed and there are others waiting at the bus stops along my route. Whew.. no problem. It sure be here any minute. I look up the road toward where the bus should be coming from.... nothing. Hmmm... I hope it comes soon. I have a transfer to catch.

After 10 minutes I realized, i'm in trouble! I have to get to the Rideau Centre and I have to get there now! I walked up the street to the Taxi Stand and figured I'd just take a cab. No problem! It's a taxi stand and there is ALWAYS at least 3 cabs sitting and waiting. Nope. Not this morning. Not a single cab.

Needless to say, I had no choice but to stand in the cold with my fellow passengers and wait. The bus finally arrived at 8:57am. Great. I have 10 minutes until my next bus comes and goes without me. Somehow the bus managed to arrive at 9:05am and I ran like crazy to get up to the 3rd floor and to the other side of the mall. Just as I arrived at the MacKenzie King Brigde the 96 pulled up. What luck is THAT? I ran out and onto the bus where I proceded to remove layers of clothing that had been keeping me warm outside and were now threatening to make me pass out from overheating when I realized that I clearly do not get enough cardio type excersize. I was sure I was going to throw up if my lungs didn't explode and kill me first!

I survived and I'll be sure to be out even earlier tomorrow. I'll also have the number for the taxi programmed into my cell phone... just in case. ;-)

Merry Christmas to all!
Remember the silly "walk like a penguin" adverts for salt or shovels or gripper boots or something? Well, there's a lot of that going on today in Ottawa. What the forecasters billed as the first "big" storm of the season was a bit of a dud here. We got a few hours of light snow that then turned into rain, lots and lots of rain. Around the time is was thinking about getting dark the sky turned a funny yellow colour, got very bright, and the temperature went way up. It was up around 7 or 8°C. It stayed like that for a bit then dropped to -11°C and that was that. Now the streets are covered in a thick layer of ice and it's downright chilly out there. So much for 30cm of snow, I would have preferred that instead of the ice. Ick!

Gift of Greenery

Thanks to Mitch and Rebeca for the lovely wreath that came in yesterday's mail. It's hanging outside on the front door and looks bee-you-tee-full on our new house.

Brrrrrrrr!!!!!

There's yet another story in the New York Times about Firefox and why you should be browsing the 'net with it and not Internet Exploder.

Thursday, December 16, 2004

It's official. The paperwork arrived today. Effective the 7th of January 2005 I will be a single dude again and in the eyes of the courts of Ontario I will be divorced.

Get Firefox 1.0

I know I've had this discussion with you guys before but it's time to say it again. If you're still using Internet Explorer, aka Internet Exploder, it's time you switched. There are a number of known issues with spyware and security exploits in IE that are completely avoided with Firefox. I've been using it for a while and so have Mom and Dad. I'll be sending you an updated version Mom along with the service packs for XP Pro. If you only use it to get rid of the popups that come so often with IE you'll notice a huge difference in how you use your browser.

Three Cheers for Canada Post

I don't know who deserves the credit - Canada Post, or the Royal Mail in the UK. I mailed my x-mas cards on the 10th and Lynne, who lives in Wales, received her card today. I'm amazed.

Car-less

It's official. We are now a car-less couple. Helloooo mass transit! I'm sure the bus drivers have missed Mitchell! :)

In case you're wondering, you can post photos here as well. Click on the Hello button just below the caption of the photo and follow the instructions to download. Posting photos could not be easier than with Hello. If you need assistance I'm always around.

Look at all of the snow! We got a bunch yesterday and a bit this morning and it's snowing again right now. Brrrrr! I'm going to have to knock the snow off the feeder or the wee birdies won't be able to get to their dinner. Posted by Hello

The Lone Star Yacht

There's Mark Thompson, the guy from Oz, standing with the big floppy hat on the deck of the Lone Star. Now, how do we get Mom on a plane to get to the BVI?

I need a holiday!

Check this place out...
Stone's Throw Villa

I can see myself there for xmas in a few years. Only $6700 US if a couple of friends went with us next Christmas! Not too bad. I have a friend here with a holiday home (like a b&b without the second b) who is swapping two weeks at her holiday home for two weeks with someone's holiday home in Hawaii in February! Sweet deal.

Christmas Cards?

I'm sorry, I know not of which you speak!

We just aren't doing them this year. Instead, I'll send everyone Crowsnest Guides in February. Won't that be nice to be able to plan your next trip here with current information as well as cross promotion with crowsnestguide.com? Yes, that was what we thought too.

Today was better than the other day! Only one person accused me of having foot-in-mouth disease. thanks.

I sold a few more ads and a few more cheques came in the door. Had a wee blowout with the lawyer in the next block. She would only advertise if she had exclusivity in the guide. Come on lady! I'm not the only coffee shop in the dang thing! Jeez. Way to promote community spirit. I sicced the Chamber prez on her, so hopefully she'll be by tomorrow with a big fat cheque for half a page.

We got most of our xmas shopping done last night and tonight have a lovely array of gifties on the bed in the spare bedroom. Not sure if the parcel will make it to Foster City in time (likely not) but I'm sure they'll have fun opening it.

Steve can't get the coonhound out of his head. I asked, "Who would name a coonhound Ingrid?" and he replied, "I'd rename it Harry". I said, "But it's a girl dog" and he replied, "Harriet". :)

Christmas Cards

Hi Everybody!

I hate to rub it in, but I'm done my Christmas cards. I think this is a record for me. Hope everyone is having a great day. Mine is okay, but I have to do some gift shopping after work - ugh. Next year I'm going to be done by September. None of this going into stores in December B.S.

Oh look, it's the Spragues! Posted by Hello
We took our last shopping trip with the automobile tonight. We took a run to Costco to impulse shop for bulk foods we don't need and jumbo rolls of tp. We had to go out to deliver two Norfolk Island pines to friends. It was ten years that I was without car, when I first came to Ottawa, and then four years with the car and now we're doing our bit for Canada and the Kyoto Protocol. One less car!

We'll go back to ordering groceries online and walking to the store for the fresh stuff. I did it while I was on my own back in 2000 and it's really a nice service to use. There is nothing like picking the canned goods and other assorteds from a list online then reading the Saturday paper and waiting for the dudes to deliver the goods. They bring along a portable interac machine so you don't even have to go to the bank to get cash. And on the really cold winter mornings it's so nice to open the door and let them carry in the groceries so you don't even have to get out of your pyjamas.

Tails from Spike

I'm sure everyone knows by now that we have a dog. If you don't, that's okay. His name is Spike, and he's a one year old border collie cross (with what we aren't sure). He's a great dog, but a bit of a goof sometimes. He doesn't like his feet touched and only barks occasionally when you play with him. Now some cute stories.

Spike has a dog toothbrush and some lovely poultry flavoured paste. Spike loves to get his teeth cleaned. Unfortunately, Blaine left the toothbrush and paste within reach. I came home Monday after work and found a red plastic stick with a few bristles on the end. The one end, bristles and all, was completely gone. The small paste tube was gone except for a few small bits of wrapper. He'd eaten it all. Needless to say, the next day he returned to us the pastic end and bristles of his brush. Yikes, that's gotta hurt.

Did we learn our lesson? Oh no. I came home from work on Tuesday and while Dana and I were eating our lunch Spike brought over the wrappers from the girls' left over chocolate bars from the night before. They were left in the same place the toothbrush was. The funny thing is the wrappers were hidden in some pillows Spike uses as a dog bed. But he brought them out and showed them to us. I think he enjoyed his peanut butter cup and white chocolate O Henry bar. He was a bit disappointed yesterday as we didn't leave anything for him to chew.

My Day!

I already told Mitch about my crappy day, but here goes for anyone else who happens on here!

Our Crowsnest Guide 2005 group appeared before Council last night to mixed reviews. The councillors who we know and who have bought ad space were all for it, and the stagnant oldies were against. Big surprise!

Then today we were presenting also at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon looking for some financial support. (I must preface this by mentioning the newspaper girl who stopped by last week to interview us. Interview went fine, paper came out Tuesday with me quoted as saying the Chamber did squat to help us in our efforts! Yikes, I don't think I said that, since time travel hasn't been invented yet and we were meeting with the Chamber today!) So it was all everyone was talking about and Betty (the former newspaper editor, who we are in semi-conflict with since they produce the crappy, typo-ridden Visitor's Guide to the Pass) stood up in the middle of the lunch and read the quote out loud for all to hear. Ugh. One of our team, Wendy, stood in my defence, as I was serving up soup and sandwiches at Stone's Throw Café, and she said that wasn't how it went down at all, she was there. Then the newspaper girl stood up and was all "Oh yes it did!" and Wendy was all, "Oh no it di'in't". I wish I could have been a fly on the wall.

Then tonight I had another meeting and the new Chamber prez was there and he was cordial, but he's pretty shy to begin with, so I couldn't imagine him instigating anything in the law office where the meeting was held. I made some self-deprecating jokes, but at this point I'm not going overboard with protesting my innocence! It's not worth the energy for a rag that 9 people read. The sales rep for the offending paper came in for a mocha (her mom is the editor and also sits on council, where we were last night! tangled web) and I told her we were extremely disappointed in the lack of attention to detail regarding the article. She apologized profusely and said they'd send the ditz back down to do a retraction. I think when she comes in I'll say 'Hi Tammy' when her name is Tara. If she corrects me, I'll just say, "Oh, close enough!"

At this point in the project we are 65-70% sold and may consider looking to the deep pockets in Waterton for our advertising bucks. Kind of disheartening, but the first year is the hardest and people will be lining up to advertise in it next year. If I live to see the day, I'll be happy!

Happy Holidays

Ok muffin, let's get to decorating!

Here's Numba One

Just a simple post to see what it looks like.
